Doornkop is a deep-level, single-shaft operation in Gauteng, some 30km west of Johannesburg, on the northern rim of the Witwatersrand Basin. While a mature operation, Doornkop still has 15 years life-of-mine remaining and is focused on narrow-reef conventional mining of the gold-bearing conglomerate South Reef.

South Deep's milling circuit consists of a single-stage semi-autogenous grinding mill (SAG) and a pebble crusher for primary milling, followed by secondary milling using two overflow ball mills.
