Dredge Box With Hungarian Riffles

The riffles, or gold traps in the sluice box are best described as "Hungarian Riffles". This type of riffle has proven to be the most efficient gold recovery system. As material flows over the riffles a eddy current is formed between each riffle opening.

 — An overhanging lip, known as a Hungarian riffle, increases the turbulence behind the riffle, which agitates the sand bed, improving gold recovery (Figures 3-5). Riffles can be made of wood, rocks, rubber, iron or steel, and are generally 1-½ inches high, placed from one-half inch to several inches apart.

This allows the riffles to do their job in ideal conditions. We are using a mix of carpets, expanded metal, Hungarian riffles and our world famous Miracle matting. This combination provides the ultimate in regenerative riffle design that works even in …

 — The other day I made different sets of riffles to try in my 36" X 9" box. First set was at 18 degree from vertical with a .25" top lip that had an 18 degree kick up from horizontal. The riffle had no bottom lip so I guess you could call it a hungerian riffle, They were 5/8th high.

Most recovery systems on suction dredges use fixed riffles to trap gold out of lighter streambed materials as they are washed through a sluice box by a flow of water. Riffles are baffle-like obstructions, fixed in place along the bottom of the sluice box.

 — The main gold capturing section of the sluice box has riffles over a carpet. The riffles create gold traps which direct the gold into the carpet which captures and holds the gold. Many types of riffle designs exist, the most common being an inverted "L" design referred to as "hungarian riffles".
