bauxite process in cement industry in Mexico

 — Bauxite residue, also known as red mud, is an abundant by-product produced during the alumina production process from bauxite ore. As the demand for eco-friendly construction materials grows, researchers are exploring the potential of bauxite residue as a binding agent in cementitious composites.

Work on the use of bauxite residue in cement has been pursued for over 80 years with many successful technical studies and several large‐scale initiatives which has led to industrial usage of bauxite residue at a number of …

 — Bauxite residue, BR, is the insoluble slurry residue generated during the digestion of bauxite ores in the alumina producing Bayer process. BR slurries are strongly alkaline, have a high salt content, electrical conductivity and ionic strength.

Using bauxite residue (BR) in association with Portland cement (PC) presents an opportunity to address challenges facing the aluminium and cement industries: the roadmap of the International Aluminium Institute identifies this application as one of the most impactful uses for BR in large-scale.

The use of BR in Portland Cement Clinker (PCC) and Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) for blended cements have been identified as high impact opportunities. Use of BR in these cement and concrete products has the potential to contribute towards: • energy and CO. 2. reduction; • natural resource utilisation reduction; and •

Bauxite residue (BR) is a by-product of the Bayer process, containing mostly phases from bauxite ore such as hematite, goethite, gibbsite and anatase, in addition to sodalite formed during the process and soluble sodium. Approximately 4.7 Mt of this residue is generated annually. The pozzolanic activity of BR is not satisfactory [11].

A technology roadmap to maximise the use of bauxite residue in cement products. This roadmap provides information and support by addressing technical, legislative and prejudicial barriers.

Bauxite residue (BR) has in principle a great potential to be used in the construction (concrete) industry considering its large availability. However, an implementation is hindered in Europe, mainly due to its classification as a waste, its alkaline nature, low reactivity and small particle size.

 — In a recent work, Zhang et al. (2011a), mixed calcined bauxite residue produced from a bauxite calcination process with granulated blast furnace slag, fly ash, clinker, gypsum and a compound agent, to produce a cementitious binder.

 — Bauxite residue (BR), a byproduct of the Bayer process, remains largely unused at present. In the Bayer process, bauxite is bathed with a sodium hydroxide-based liquor of high alkalinity for gibbsite (i.e., alumina) dissolution and extraction, resulting in the formation of the so-called red mud.
