Synopsis. The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents a new era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x 12 and 12 x.

In "conventional" room-and-pillar mining, production occurs in five steps: mechanically undercutting the coalbed, drilling holes into the bed for explosives, blasting the coal, loading the broken coal into shuttle cars for delivery to a conveyor, and then bolting the mine roof in the excavated area.

 — Coal miners use giant machines to remove coal from the ground. They use two methods: surface or underground mining. Many U.S. coal beds are very near the ground's surface, and about two-thirds of coal production comes from surface mines.

Raw coal may be sold as mined or may be processed in a beneficiation/washing plant to remove noncombustible materials (up to 45% reduction in ash content) and inorganic sulfur (up to 25% reduction). Coal beneficiation is based on wet physical processes such as gravity separation and flotation.

Coal exploration includes gathering data, which allows for decisions to be made on the desirability of further exploration, the technical feasibility of mining, and economic feasibility – including the size of the mine and the quality of the coal.
